Brief Introduction of Geocell Confinement System
Geocell Confinement System--also known as Cellular Confinement System(CCS), it is a kind of three-dimensional network structure shaped by high-strength HDPE (high density polyethylene) sheets through ultrasonic welding of high strength. The depth of the geocells as well as the size of each cellular unit can vary as per design requirements. The surface of geocells are smooth or textured, the textured geocells increase soil-geocell wall friction. Geocells can be perforated or non-perforated. If the depth of geocell is over 10cm, the geocell can be perforated, the geocell wall is punctured to assist in immediate dissipation of developed porewater pressures due to increased stresses within the infill of the individual cells.

Geocell Confinement System Characteristic
The geocell ecological slope protection saves 20 ~ 40% of the project cost compared with the common protection; Compared with the general gravity retaining wall, the reinforced soil retaining wall saves 10 ~ 15% of the project cost; It has the advantages of restoring ecology and greening the environment. Flexible raft foundation and pile raft composite foundation save 8 ~ 10% of the project cost compared with the common foundation treatment methods; The technology of abutment flexible approach slab can treat the disease of "vehicle jumping at the bridge head". In the loess area where there is a lack of gravel, compared with the rigid approach slab, it can save about 30% of the project cost and 5 ~ 10% of the cost in general areas; Geocell not only has better treatment effect than ordinary plane reinforced materials, but also saves 7% of the project cost.
Application
Geocell has been popularized and applied in China for more than ten years and has achieved good engineering results, especially in the anti-seepage of concrete channel and the projects requiring slope protection and reinforcement such as expressway, river slope and retaining wall. In contemporary subgrade construction, geocell is usually used to effectively prevent the uneven settlement of subgrade. The reinforcement of geocell can effectively reduce the vertical stress and shear force in soil and enhance the stability of subgrade.
Laying method
1. The honeycomb geocell shall be covered during transportation to prevent long-term exposure and pollution;
2. During hot melt welding of honeycomb cell, process experiment shall be conducted before construction. Before the experiment, submit the experiment plan to the supervisor and carry out the experiment after approval. The lap length shall not be less than 10cm, and the lap surface shall not be pulled within 2h after welding;
3. When the tensioning grid is laid flat on the slope surface and the honeycomb geocell is laid, it starts from the slope shoulder and opens along the slope to the slope bottom. The tensioning chamber is placed flat on the slope, and the end slot of the cell is placed in the U-shaped anchor ditch;
4. After the top is fixed, first fix the left and right edges of the tensioned honeycomb geocell grid, and then temporarily fix the bottom opening at the lower end with anchor drill. After filling, pull out the anchor rod used for fixing the lower end;
5. The open honeycomb geocell shall be in a full rhombic shape. It is strictly prohibited to trample or press with heavy objects to cause cell deformation;
6. The filling and burial operation shall be carried out after the honeycomb geocell is inspected to be qualified. The top shall be filled first, and the top U-shaped anchor ditch shall be buried, and then the buried pressure ditch at the slope bottom shall be filled and buried from top to bottom;
7. Humus soil shall be paved on the paved honeycomb cell within 12h for protection, or other protective measures shall be taken to prevent ultraviolet radiation and accelerate the aging of honeycomb cell;
8. After the whole is buried, the soil of one-third of the height of the honeycomb geocell is covered;
9. No paving is allowed in rainy and snowy weather.
